Tips for Self-Studying

Candidates who have opted to write the CIQS exams to complete their outstanding TPE Part A subjects will need to self-study.  It is recommended to allow an adequate amount of time (approximately 4 months or more) to obtain the learning resource(s), to study and learn the content, before challenging the exam.
The following are a few tips to help prepare for the exams more effectively:
  • Set a realistic goal/Create a schedule – Allocate a set time after working hours to study everyday, but adjust and change your timing depending on your schedule.  Ensure to schedule some time for a mental break each week.
  • Split the material into sections – Divide the materials you need to learn into manageable sections so that you do not become overwhelmed by the amount of information you are studying in one night, week, month.
  • Review material the same day you learn it – Review new study material before moving on (ie. re-write or type notes, review a chapter that you read, etc.)  This will help you absorb and retain the information you have just learned.
  • Length of study sessions – Schedule short periods of study time with short breaks in between to maintain your focus and allow yourself to absorb the material more easily.
  • Test yourself often – Test yourself regularly to help you understand what you have learned and which areas you need to focus more time on.
  • Find a study space – Establish a specific area free of distractions for studying.  This will help prepare you to focus on learning when you enter that space.
  • Be organized – Organize your study materials to make it easier for you to find when reviewing the information, if needed.
