A PQS has a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of construction and construction methods, as well as the laws relating to construction projects and accounting, in order to provide costs and financial advice.  They manage the finances on large engineering/construction projects and work to maximize the profit by balancing cost and quality.  A PQS is often part of the entire life-cycle of a project.

A PQS may specialize in mechanical or electrical disciplines, but all Professional Quantity Surveyors must have a working knowledge of the practical aspects and designs features of both fields.  Obtaining a PQS offers proof of education and experience that can gain you a seat at the table with the decision-makers where you can help shape how funds are spend and on what.  This designation may help advance your career to where you are one of the decision-makers on large-scale construction projects.

Some of the functions that a PQS may perform are:

  • Preparation of cost estimates
  • Preliminary estimating cost planning and cost control
  • Project/financial monitoring services
  • Measurement of quantities
  • Claims management, preparation, and defense
  • Architectural administration
  • Preparation and review of construction schedules
  • Value analysis
  • Construction management
  • Procurement and contract management
  • Mediation and arbitration
  • Life cycle costing
  • Other areas of practice, such as property management, specification writing, strategic planning, education, etc.
  • Expert witness services
