"AI in the Construction Industry - Insights, Advantages, and Risks"

Presentation Abstract:
Osler's construction and technology law experts explore ways AI is impacting the construction industry. Their discussion will include an AI 'primer', address the various applications of AI in the sector (including in relation to BIM), discuss common areas of legal risk and explore commercial considerations such as performance commitments, intellectual property, data considerations and liability and risk allocation.

ANDREW WONG

Andrew is a civil engineering graduate whose practice includes work in international and Canadian construction and infrastructure matters.

His project experience includes advising on public-private partnerships and alternative financing and procurement.

The projects he has worked on includes those relating to transit, schools, airports, railway stations, highways, roads, waste water treatment plants, water treatment plants, transmission lines, nuclear power plants, windfarms, power plants, office towers, data centers, hospitals, manufacturing facilities and warehouses.

Joel Heard

Joel is a partner in Osler's Toronto office, practicing in the area of construction law. He has significant experience advising on domestic and international projects of all sizes and across a variety of industries including energy (including electrical power generation and transmission projects, and natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline construction), infrastructure, mining, manufacturing, transportation, education and healthcare.

Joel's practice includes advising and assisting clients with respect to such matters as risk identification, allocation and mitigation, project structuring and teaming arrangements (including traditional, design-build, EPC, construction management, public-private partnerships, alternative financing and procurements, joint ventures, consortia and subcontracts), procurement, contract negotiation and documentation, project execution issues, and claims analysis and avoidance.

Prior to joining Osler, Joel was a partner at a major Canadian law firm, and worked as in-house counsel for several years at one of the world's largest engineering and construction companies before establishing his own boutique firm focused on construction and commercial projects.

SAM IP

Sam is a member of the Technology Group that regularly works with artificial intelligence companies or organizations making use of artificial intelligence technologies. His practice also includes technology procurement, contracting, and other commercial and corporate matters, with a significant focus on advising clients on complex and thorny issues related to the use of data, blockchain technology and, open source software.

Sam is also a Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT), a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, a licensed professional engineer and was the co-creator of Osler's free open source tool, Osler Code Detect. He regularly helps organizations comply with ambiguous provisions found in many open source licenses, developing policies that are used by engineers, and negotiates various open source issues as part of licensing and M&A transactions.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys, and once completed that Mont-Tremblant Triathlon.
